McDowell County Animal Services

McDowell County Animal Services is responsible for operating the McDowell County Animal Shelter. The Shelter is a managed intake facility that accepts animals based on available space, resources, and the needs of the animals currently in our care. The Shelter also provides an adoption center for animals that are healthy and suitable for adoption.

Adoption Information

The adoption fee is $65 for dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.
To help ensure that animals are ready for their new homes, all animals adopted from the McDowell County Animal Shelter are spayed or neutered, up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations, and dewormed. All dogs are also tested for heartworms.

Purpose of the Adoption Program

The Animal Shelter adoption policy is designed to:

• Reduce health and safety risks to the public associated with stray, vicious, and potentially rabid animals. Help prevent unwanted animal reproduction and reduce pet overpopulation in McDowell County. Increase the number of animals placed in safe, suitable homes.

• Reduce the number of animals the County must euthanize due to a lack of suitable homes and the presence of diseases.
